In his recent book "Deep Economy," author Bill McKibben describes how small business is the key to a stronger, more community oriented economy. That's why I chose to help Mercy Corp Northwest, an organization that supports people in small business. To promote their lending program Mercy Corp NW asked for a poster design that spoke to the idea that there's power in small capital.
To me, a sewing machine represents exactly that kind of capital-- something old and yet very much still relevant today. When I look at the work happening through Etsy, at the Renegade Craft Fairs, I see young people taking a chance on a new idea and a new way of making a living. For them, a smaller but stronger and deeper economy is the future-- that's powerful!
