Like many beneficial insects, firefly are threatened by habitat loss, pesticide-use, light pollution, invasive species--there's a lot where people can make a difference. Creating safe habitat is pretty easy actually. They like wild zones, from small to large, that are leafy and brushy, and where there is moist soil where firefly larvae can hunt slugs and snails. They also need it to be dark at night, so minimize bright outdoor nightlights that can scramble their ability to use their lights to find mates.
